Data analyst, conservationist, and mountain runner moving climate action forward.

My professional mission is to build data tools and perform analyses that accelerate climate and conservation solutions.

Collect

With a background in marketing, nonprofit management, resource conservation, and business analytics, I have theoretical and practical knowledge in data collection and management experience with R Studio, Python, ArcGIS, and Google Earth Engine.

Process

Armed with dual master’s degrees in resource conservation and business analytics, I can offer support on cleaning data, synthesizing, and uncovering trends with descriptive, predictive, and spatial analyses.

Communicate

Given my background at the intersection of social and data science, it should come as no surprise that I have a particular affinity for data storytelling. I have strong knowledge of data visualization best practices, including creating static charts as well as interactive tools like dashboards, apps, and maps. To create these I’ve worked primarily in R Studio, R Shiny, Python, ArcGIS (Pro, Online, & Storymaps), Canva, and Flourish.

Featured Project

My Storymap on the Snowman Race in Bhutan has been selected as a finalist in the 2024 ArcGIS Storymaps competition. This project details my experience racing the inaugural 2022 Snowman Race, a five-day ultrarunning stage race through northern Bhutan designed to use mountain running as a vehicle to mobilize climate action.

Featured Project

The Nature Conservation Index is a tool created by a group of universities and non-profits to assess the effectiveness of conservation efforts around the world. My work brings the index to life via an animated and interactive data visualization built with Svelte and D3.

About Me

I’m Nate, a data analyst passionate about using analytics and storytelling to move the needle on climate and conservation solutions.

From statistical analyses that shed light on patterns in data, to dashboards that enable better decision-making, to interactive and engaging data communications tools like dynamic reports or ArcGIS Storymaps — I help turn raw data into useful stories.

Data science & writing

I’m a disciplined data analyst and conservationist with dual data-focused master's degrees in both Resource Conservation and Business Analytics and eight years’ work experience. I have a proven ability in leveraging data analytics to assess and visualize social/environmental impacts for leading climate consultancy, and a demonstrated business leadership ability — for instance, I co-founded a climate-action non-profit and raised $150k+ over the previous three years.

Mountain running

I believe in showcasing all of my passions, not just the professional work in data. As Walt Whitman wrote, “I am large, I contain multitudes.”

Here you’ll find trip reports from the mountains and my sporadic-at-best ultrarunning racing efforts.

I’m also a proud member of the Protect Our Winters Athlete Alliance with their trail running team.

  • I’m thrilled to recommend Nate Bender for his outstanding work analyzing and synthesizing our 2024 Athlete Alliance engagement data. Nate brought a rare combination of deep athlete perspective and analytical precision to this project—allowing us to better understand the impact of our athlete community in the climate movement.

Nate’s work helped highlight where our Athlete Alliance is thriving, where gaps exist, and how we can refine our strategies moving forward.

Beyond his technical expertise, Nate approached the project with professionalism, efficiency, and a keen eye for detail. He worked seamlessly with our team, ensuring that the final dataset was both accurate and useful for decision-making. Thanks to his contributions, we now have the most comprehensive view of athlete engagement in POW’s history.

For any organization looking for a data analyst who understands athlete networks, community engagement, and impact measurement, Nate is an absolute asset. We’re grateful for his work and highly recommend him.
